It is difficult to imagine a time when Ian was not the branch secretary of Wirral. Many of us probably can’t recall a time without his guidance and presence. Ian has been a cornerstone for staff across Wirral, a constant and dependable force in the realm of education.
As I deliver the news of Ian’s departure, the reactions have been quite memorable. Some have gasped, others have smiled knowingly, and among the head teachers and education colleagues, there were even a few chuckles and smiles. One might have even punched the air in jest. Formally, however, they all wish to pass on their best regards and gratitude for the tireless work Ian has done.
This reaction, I believe, encapsulates Ian’s remarkable ability to work harmoniously with schools while giving the tough ones a run for their money. Ian, I am sure you would be disappointed if they all hadn’t shown at least a touch of happiness at the thought of you no longer giving them a hard time.
The most common response I’ve received is a deep sigh followed by words of sympathy, often concluding with, “You have some very big shoes to fill.” Indeed, Ian’s shoes are enormous, and his departure will leave a significant gap. Ian, your expertise, character, and what Jan fondly calls your “cheeky” smile, will be sorely missed. Personally, I will do my best, but growing a beard like yours is out of the question.
Everyone here tonight is present because of you, Ian, not just to see you off, but to celebrate the vibrant community you have built. From the days of standing in this room with one other person, you have grown Wirral into a bustling community. Whether supporting individuals through their personal challenges and triumphs or nurturing a spark of interest in collectivism into a roaring fire, you have pulled people in and built the Union.
You leave Wirral NEU in a far better state than when you found it. Even those who may not fully recognize or appreciate your contributions have benefited immensely from your work. Despite your best efforts, not everyone could be here tonight. Some, who have benefitted from your relentless efforts, would have loved to be here if only GDPR allowed us to inform them. But your impact is undeniable.
As I conclude, I want to extend my deepest gratitude on behalf of myself, the committee, past committee members, and the current and past membership. To all those working across Wirral, secretaries and staff nationwide, thank you, Ian, for 17 years of unwavering dedication and service. You may not realise it but you have seen off 7 prime ministers and 14 education secretaries in that time. Whilst that seems impressive let’s not forget liz truss was one of them so…
Your journey with Wirral has been one of incredible impact and influence. The stories of your successes, and the challenges you’ve faced and overcome with members could fill this room many times over. Your presence has nurtured individual sparks of interest in the union, transforming them into the roaring fire that sustains us today.
Through thick and thin, you’ve been the a knight in shining armour for many. Ian, your leadership has turned a fledgling group into a vibrant, thriving community. You’ve stood by almost all of us at some point during our struggles, cheered us on in our victories, and, above all, shown us the true spirit of unity and solidarity.
To wrap up, let us raise our glasses not just to bid you farewell, but to celebrate the indelible mark you’ve left on all our lives. Thank you, Ian, for everything.
Cheers to your remarkable journey and the even greater adventures that lie ahead.
Thank you.
