Insurance Policy? We are much more than that.
The NEU was formed from two well-established national unions, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) in 2019. The Union now accounts for at least half a million members and is the biggest education union in Europe.
The NEU has a well-organised structure which enables every member to access support at a number of levels. Locally, in each district, there are branches with elected officers there to provide localised, on the ground advice and training. Regionally, the North West has officer, CPD and administrative support for districts, branches and members as appropriate. Nationally provision includes the NEU website, Executive Committee, CPD opportunities and elected members.
Successes locally have involved local officers supporting members, with regional support when required. See the news blog for our success at Kingsway Primary School in December, for example. Members responding locally to the high risks of schools re-opening in January led to pressure being exerted nationally on the government, and schools ‘closed’ within a day of term starting.
