Bora Oktas, Regional Officer, NEU North West, reports on how NEU members Birkenhead School defeated plans to cut their pension.
Members of the National Education Union (NEU) at Birkenhead School in Wirral, Merseyside, have secured a resounding victory following their successful formal strike ballot.
The Battle Against Controversial Proposals
The battle centred around three contentious proposals by the employer:
1. To cap the contribution at its current level until September
2. In September move all teachers into their Aviva Pension scheme.
3. Amend employment contracts.

Victory
NEU members rallied together, demonstrating their commitment to safeguarding their rights and the quality of education at Birkenhead School. Their collective voice resonated, leading to a decisive outcome:
In response to the determined campaign, the employer has decided to shelve the proposals.
This means that the TPS employer contribution will be met in full and employment contracts remain unchanged.
What’s next?
Buoyed by this success, NEU members are now setting their sights on the future. Here are the next steps they could pursue:
1. Pay Claim
Campaigning for fair and competitive pay is high on the agenda. NEU members recognise the importance of recognising their dedication and expertise through fair pay alongside their brothers and sisters in the state education sector.
2. Trade Union Recognition
Strengthening their collective voice, members aim to secure official recognition as a trade union. This recognition will empower them further in negotiations and decision-making processes.
A Unified Front
The victory at Birkenhead School exemplifies the power of union organisation, unity, and determination.
NEU members have shown that when staff stand together, they can protect their rights.
