In it to win it!
The NEU has moved to a formal ballot for strike action on pay and funding. The ballot began on Friday 28th October and will include teachers and support staff members.
The formal ballot follows a successful online ballot in which:
• 86% of teachers voted for strike action on a 62% turnout
• 76% of support staff voted for strike action on a 68% turnout
These are the highest figures the union has achieved and should be of concern to the government. The result also shows that we can beat the government thresholds in a formal ballot.
Five reasons why
1. The value of teachers’ pay has fallen by 20% since 2010;
2. The value of support staff pay has fallen by 27% since 2010;
3. We cannot have another year of below inflation pay rises;
4. We want a fully-funded pay rise in line with inflation for all teachers and support staff;
5. Schools face problems recruiting teachers and support staff.
Unions making history
The NASUWT and NAHT are also balloting members on similar timescales. This means over 500,000 education staff are being balloted. Unions representing nurses and midwives are balloting members for action on pay. That is over one million health and education workers balloting together.
