Preliminary Ballot Meeting (Plus MEET and EAT)

January 26, 2024 @ 5:00 pm7:00 pm

All WELCOME!

A day after most schools had closed for Christmas, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan sent her remit letter to the School Teachers’ Pay Review Body (STRB) – the independent body which makes recommendations on teacher pay. In the letter, she makes it clear that there will be little extra money available for schools.

So, we are more certain than ever that the Government is gearing up for a paltry 1-2 per cent teacher pay award next year.

We always knew that gains made through our action were only a stepping stone on the road to the full restoration of pay lost since 2010. On 2 December, your executive agreed a plan to pressure the Government into changing course. Our priority right now is to get our reps, union groups and members ballot-ready, so that we can launch an indicative ballot in late February and be confident of success.

Teachers in England work longer hours than almost anywhere else in the world, yet we’re still finding it hard to make ends meet.

Long hours and poor pay mean teachers are leaving the profession in their droves. One in eight teachers leave after just a year in the job and a staggering one in three leave within five years.

Last year, our members’ faith and dedication won more funding for schools and a significant uplift in your pay. In 2024, we need members to stand firm again, to demand fair pay and decent school funding, and to fight for the education system our pupils deserve.

Informal chance to meet with local officers over some food and a drink.
